The four Banff mountains that everyone uses to orientate themselves in the Town of Banff are Tunnel Mtn, Sulphur Mtn, Cascade Mtn and Rundle Mtn.
While you are in Banff, I definitely recommend getting up to the summit of one of these mountains to get a bird’s eye view of the town of Banff. There is no better feeling than to be at the top of a mountain and have the chance to experience the sheer beauty of the Canadian Rockies.
Never fear though, there are ways to get to the top of a mountain that require little to no exercise at all. The most visited mountain top around Banff is Sulphur Mountain which can be reached by the Banff Sightseeing Gondola about 3 kilometres from downtown Banff. This is something I highly recommend as a Banff activity.
For those of you looking to put in a little more effort, I’d recommend climbing up Tunnel Mountain. At 1,692 metres, it’s definitely the smallest of the mountains around Banff but it will leave you with the satisfaction of knowing you hiked to the top of mountain. The hike is roughly 4km round trip and takes about 2 hours to complete.
And last but not least, for all you adventure seekers out there, it is possible to scramble up to the summits of Cascade and Rundle. This climb is definitely not for the unfit, but worth the challenge if you are up for it. Before attempting either of these routes, be sure to visit the Parks Canada office to get a scrambling route map. You wouldn’t want to do these hikes unprepared.
Whether you’re looking for a challenging hike or a leisurely ride up to a mountain top, I promise you that reaching the summit of a mountain in Banff National Park will be one of the highlights of your vacation.
